Very interesting and thoughtful analysis bringing attention to this phenomenon. I always wonder about and am horrified by the actual physical pain they are willing to endure for a higher purpose. Also similar for hunger strikes but slower and less shocking. All require a capacity for empathy in witnessing and journalists like you to help do them deserved justice.
Are you aware that Bruce Mayrock (I think his name was Bruce) self-immolated to protest Viet Nam war, in front of the UN “swords to plowshares” sculpture? He was a Columbia student.
One must wonder what we have lost with the passing of these lives. Their death is given meaning when we know about their lives. Thank you for putting them in our faces.
