From the Mideast to South Africa to Cuba to defending Native Americans and taking on Big Oil and other corporate interests, the senator from South Dakota pushed the envelope on issue after issue.
Thank you, Sam, for introducing me to James Abourezk... up until now a man about whom I don't recall every reading before. In the process of that introduction, you also shed some new light on the Israeli lobby and their hold over policy. One often reads contradicting perspective about this in various opinions- i.e. either that Israel is merely a U.S. puppet, or that Israel, through its lobbies, wields a lot of undue influence over U.S. policy.
I suspect it's a bit of both as Israel is at least a proxy for U.S. power projection in the Mid East, and a willing supporter at the UN, etc., and the U.S. will defend Israel from international criticism and sanction no matter how many injustices , no matter how repugnant its Apartheid is.
If only we might see one day again, a few dozen more Abourezks - people willing to fight for principles of justice regardless of the personal consequences.
He attended a meeting of the Break the Bonds group with Dayton to try to get him to divest from Israeli bonds a few years ago. We will miss him. Thanks for the eulogy.
This is Alya Abourezk, Jim’s youngest daughter. Thank you so much for the extensive, lovely article about my dad. He was truly a great force and one-of-a-kind.
The Irgun targeted British soldiers. The Palestinians target civilians. Easily verified and honestly Begin would have made mincemeat of this guy. Clearly not why the discussion was ended
The implication that there is something bad or evil about Israel is disgusting and now quite fashionable. Clearly none of you care at all about Jewish history and have been brainwashed by the fictional "Palestinian" narrative. The Palestinians have had many opportunities to build a state next to Israel but that's not what they want and they cannot have my country.

Don’t worry, America. We have AOC.
A lovely tribute to someone I had never known about but appreciate all he did. Thanks for educating me about him.
You educated me on so many issues and will be sorely missed, Senator.
